In late November '08, Amy and I went on a 10-day camping tour of New Zealand. We had an awesome time driving a clockwise route around South Island and up the center of North Island. I'm weeding out the best photos but there are still enough for several galleries. I'll mention the highways below so you can google along if you'd like. :) DAY 7: We headed north then northeast along Highways 6, 63, and 1 to Picton where we caught the Cook Straight ferry across to Wellington. We camped overnight just north of Otaki at the Waikawa DOC site. The rain was downpouring all day so I took only a handful of photos. Photos here include the drive to Westport, a large vinyard, and the Picton ferry. DAY 8: Back on North Island, we drove north on Highway 1, along the coast and Desert Road to Tongariro National Park, the Kaimanawa Road DOC site our destination for the night. We also popped by the Ketetahi trailhead of the Tongariro Crossing track and tramped a couple of hours up Mt. Tongariro, getting above the treeline so I could take some vista photos. Those can be found on the Tongariro Tramp page. Photos here include the Desert Road, Tongariro National Park, Mt. Ruapehu, and Lake Rotoaira. DAY 9: We continued north on Highways 1, 30, 5, 36, 2, and 25 to the Coromandel via Taupo and Rotorua, camping at a holiday park on Hahei Beach for the night. We didn't make it to Hot Water Beach in time to dig a sauna pit in the sand, but we did get to play awhile. Photos here include Lake Taupo, Huka Falls, Whenuakite, and Hot Water Beach. DAY 10: The last day of our adventure we got up early and made a tramp out to Cathedral Cove (you may recognize it from the Narnia films). By mid-day we were en-route back to Auckland along Highways 25, 25A, 2, and 1. ET had to be returned to the dealer by 4 pm, and we had to unload at the flat first, so we drove fast and took no photos after leaving the Coromandel. Photos here include Hahei, Mahurangi Island, and Cathedral Cove. |
