My brother Tim and I met up for a day exploring Maquoketa Caves State Park in eastern Iowa. We had a great time, though most of the caves were squeezed through were too tight to take photos. One was quite a vertical climb down and I had to ditch my pack entirely to go in. Tim jumped up and squeezed into another a bit too high for me to access.
Our visit was shortly after a really heavy storm had gone though and caused massive flooding. The big cave was still without lighting and part of the walkway was damaged (it completely flooded), and the creek through the park looked liked it'd been completely ravaged. It had, actually. A (I think they said) 14-foot wall of water came roaring through the cave system and downstream. Yikes! |
